The Ocean Beach Woman's Club celebrates 100 years in 2024
A look back in time....
A Vision
Monday, November 19, 1924 a preliminary meeting was held with Mrs. John L. Sweeney temporary chairman presiding. The vision of a Woman's Club for Ocean Beach was discussed and it was decided that the purpose would be to work for the community in its civic, educational and social development. And so The nonprofit Ocean Beach Woman’s Club (OBWC) was founded.
Formation
January 25, 1925 was the election of a permanent President and Board of Directors. Roberta Winens was elected the first President. At that time we rented the Flatiron building that was at the corner of Abbott and Newport. After 14 years that building got washed out to sea and we rented rooms in different places (including where CVS is now located).
Beautification
Lifeguards
The OBWC Garden Committee planted five full streets in OB with trees and shrubs-most of which are still growing.
The OBWC was instrumental in getting lifeguards year round.
Servicemembers
After Pearl Harbor, the OBWC created a Servicemen’s Club that was open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. daily providing food and rest for the service members guarding the oceanfront.
Clubhouse
The OBWC purchased our current building and moved it and to its' current location at Bacon & Muir after a charter member donated the land.
Community Service
Longevity
The OBWC helped establish the youth center and was instrumental in establishing the Ocean Beach Library as well as having worked to get roads paved, trash-removal service, and park maintenance.
The OBWC celebrates 100 years of civic, educational and social development.
